Build Your Own Degree

Starting from Academic Year 2021/2022 cohort, both Electrical Engineering (EE) and Computer Engineering (CEG) programmes have adopted a new undergraduate curriculum structure that gives students greater choice, breadth and flexibility in charting their learning journeys. Students will read a total of 160 Units (or the equivalent of 40 courses), consisting of 60 units of Common Curriculum courses, 60 units of Major requirements, and 40 units of Unrestricted Electives (UE). The Common Curriculum has been jointly developed with inputs from industry partners.

Unrestricted Electives (UE): Within and Beyond Electrical and Computer Engineering

The 40 units of UE space allows students to explore greater breadth or depth in any subject and at any level.

If you wish to go deeper within your chosen engineering discipline, you may opt to read a SpecialisationIf you prefer instead to broaden your knowledge and skills in a complementary or contrasting area, consider taking a Minor or Second Major.

With the 40 units of UE space, students have the flexibility to take (i) a Second Major, (ii) a Minor and a Specialisation, (iii) two Minors, or (iv) two Specialisations. These fit well into your degree structure without you having to delay graduation.

Other options of using your UE space include:

  • Enhancement Modulesexperiential learning opportunities for innovation, teaching and research within CDE
  • Design Your Own Module (DYOM): students may choose what they want to learn, how they wish to learn, and from whom they wish to learn, for up to 8 units
  • Career Catalyst: foundational course to kickstart students’ preparation for internships and their future careers

Second Majors, Minors & Specialisations

Choose from more than 35 Second Majors and 70 Minors / Specialisations across different Faculties, Colleges and Schools in NUS.

For the many other Second Majors and Minors that are not available at the point of application, you can still declare (for "Open" Majors/Minors) or apply (for "Restricted" Majors/Minors) to take them no later than the fifth semester of your study. For the six Specialisations listed above, you can also apply for them at the end of your fourth semester if you did not get them at the point of admission.
