My life in NUS from 2016 to 2020 has been nothing short of exciting. When I was a student in NUS, I took up various CCAs and projects. Initially, I was hesitant to take up leadership roles such as Flag Director in Engineering Club and House Leader in ECE Camp. However, with my peers’ support and my intrinsic motivation, I gained the courage to step out of my comfort zone. I am thankful that I did, because these opportunities boosted my confidence in public speaking, helped strengthen my resilience, and improved my teamwork skills. I also took up various customer-focused and volunteering opportunities as I like bringing enthusiasm and positivity to others.

Most of the CCAs and projects I have chosen to participate in involves working behind the scenes. What motivated me to commit myself tirelessly is the joy, significance, and benefits that the event brings to others. All these unique experiences that I have been through have shaped me to become who I am. Looking back at these past 4 years, I am really glad that I chose to pursue my interests and expand my horizons to try new things. Along the way, I am happy and grateful to have met such wonderful friends and teachers who I can rely on.

Bhatt Paras Krishna who recently graduated as the Valedictorian felt that it was a humbling honour to have spoken on behalf of the Computer Engineering graduating cohorts of 2020 and 2021 as the Valedictorian.

Paras felt that he would not have made it here without the support of friends, faculty, and fellow students, to whom he is forever grateful.
In the following article, he recalls his journey in ECE, and even offers some tips to his peers. Regardless of whether you are a new ECE student or a current student, these tips may prove helpful to enabling you to make the most out of your campus life.

Here is an excerpt – “Graduating in the throes of a pandemic was a strange experience for our cohort. We could hardly be physically present in school over our final year, and we could not have a graduation ceremony in the flesh to say one final physical goodbye to our friends. The residual feeling is a mix of longing over the lost physical interactions, and gratitude for the fact that despite the challenges, we found the support necessary to allow us to graduate in time and move on to the next big chapter of our lives.

Allow me to pay forward that kindness and support, and offer some tips to those who are planning to, or are, studying in the ECE department at NUS,:

  • Make full use of project-based modules like CG1111, CG1112, CS2113 etc to network and make friends with your fellow batchmates…

Sim Yu Jie
Sim Yu Jie (CEG4)

Hello everyone, I am Sim Yu Jie, Year 4 ECE Computer Engineering (CEG) student, and the 6th and 7th ECE USC President.

What is ECE USC

The ECE USC refers to the Undergraduate Student Council under the ECE Department. As the student council, our main duty was to be the bridge between the ECE student body and the department. During the academic year, we organise various major events such as the Freshmen Welcome Party, Graduation Party, ECE Career Fair, as well as a Student-Staff conference, where we propose changes to academic matters to improve the learning experience for all ECE students.

Decision to take charge of my student life

I was first introduced to the USC by a fellow friend in the same cohort. As a new freshman in NUS, I was captivated by the idea of taking initiative to change my student life.

Ms Pranati Rajagopal, ECE Electrical Engineering Year 2 student who is the Project Manager of the NUS Rover Team was recently featured on a talk show at MoneyFM 89.3 together with the team’s Technical Lead, Ms Anoushka Bhutani (Mechanical Engineering Year 2). In the talk show, the students shared about their Mars Rover Project, how they apply NASA methodology in building it, and where they see Singapore’s future in space.

In the article below, Pranati shares with us her experience as an ECE Year 2 student working with her team-mates across multiple disciplines, and the various engineering and leadership skills she applied and picked up along the way…

Mars Rover Project

During my freshman year (2019), I came across NUS SEDS (Students for the Exploration and Development of Space) and the Rover Team during the annual Inginium fair.

NUS IEEE-HKN organized a Postgraduate Sharing Session, which was attended by 18 NUS Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) undergraduates, to give a clear understanding of what a postgraduate life and program are like. Participants listened to the sharing from two Ph.D. students from the department of ECE NUS – Ng Hong Jie, who is doing research in Quantum Communication, and Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Thao, who is doing research in Neuromorphic Computing.

Participants got to hear and learn about preparations that can be done during undergraduate studies, general Ph.D. program and application process, research topics, possible future plans, Ph.D. scholarships in Singapore, and even daily life as Ph.D. students. They also got the chance to directly ask questions to the two Ph.D. students at the end of the session.

We appreciate the time that the speakers have spared out of their busy schedule and of the same importance, we also thank the participants who have joined the session despite it being held in a reading week. We hope that despite it being held online, participants still find the sharing session meaningful and helpful for their future careers!

Watt’s up!
I am Hardik, and I have recently graduated from Electrical Engineering at NUS. Currently I am pursuing a startup idea that aims to build Southeast Asia’s first one-stop portal to custom manufacturing: https://factorem.co.

During my 3rd year at NUS, I got to ride on a once in a lifetime opportunity by travelling to and working at a startup in North America. This was part of the NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC) program, which is highly competitive to get into, but the unique experience promised drove me to pursue it.

My NOC journey became especially unique, having been part of the pioneering batch for the NOC Toronto program. The most unexpected part of the journey…read more

Hey there, I am Teo Zheng Ping (Zayden), currently a year 3 going year 4 student in Electrical Engineering.  I am currently a student on the NUS Overseas College (NOC) Stockholm Programme. As such, I was supposed to be based in Stockholm, Sweden from January to December this year. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I only managed to spend 2 months in Sweden, having returned to Singapore in March.

I chose to do my NOC in Stockholm due to the diversity and openness of the startup ecosystem in Sweden. Not forgetting the fact that Spotify, Skype and many other unicorns were born and bred in Stockholm. My first impression of the Swedes would be during my preliminary rounds of interviews with the prospective companies in Stockholm. They were friendly, highly accommodating and did not have any qualms about my inability to speak Swedish.

This year’s 2020 ECE FYP Poster Competition was conducted electronically due to the Covid19 situation. The top 3 winners for this year’s FYP Poster Competition share their experiences about their project teamwork and the challenges they faced in their FYP with some advice to their juniors!

PhD Sharing Session

A post-graduate sharing session was organized by the NUS IEEE-HKN student chapter and took place on the 21st of November, 2019. During the session, Ms. Qiu Yihui and Mr. Dong Bowei shared about the value of PhD, their personal journey and reasons for doing a PhD. They also talked about what they do in a day as a PhD Student and how it was different from an undergraduate student. The event gave our senior undergraduate students the opportunity to explore their suitability for an academic research career and discover how a PhD can catapult them ahead in such a career.

Projects provide unique opportunities through which ECE students can develop important attributes of a competent professional engineer. Projects facilitate the development of engineering problem solving skills, i.e., formulating a problem and a set of specifications for the solution, the requirement to use a more holistic approach to arrive at an optimal solution, and the need to draw on the knowledge and skills from different disciplines and to bring it to bear on the solution.

Student Share

Student Life Sharing Sessions, organized by the ECE Student Life office, gave students an overview of the range of readily available services within the University (e.g. counselling and psychological services, career advising). In particular, one of these sessions was on “Be what you are: Discover your career path through the secrets of personality type”. It reinforced that work will be satisfying if it interests one and allows one to do the things one enjoy. Even though work can be interesting and enjoyable for one, it may not be suitable for another due to people’s differing personalities.
