SAFMC is an annual event organized by DSO National Laboratories and supported by Ministry of Defence (MINDEF). It is the nation’s search for a flying wonder and is open to all schools and students who want to reach for the sky. The fully autonomous category is open to all universities, polytechnics and public. It involves a number of challenging missions in unknown indoor environments, which include automatic taking-off, flying through a window and a narrow corridor before reaching a chemical room, where the drone has to search and collect a chemical sample and identify a casualty. It then enters a dark room to search for a second casualty before exiting through a circular window and clearing the array of poles to land precisely on a landing pad.

In addition to the cash prizes, the champion team is eligible to win a sponsorship to represent Singapore in an overseas international flying machine competition. The sponsorship is capped at
$5,000 per team member, up to a maximum of 6 members.
