The winning entry is entitled “A Wearable, Patient-Adaptive Freezing of Gait Detection System with Biofeedback Cueing for Parkinson’s Disease Patients.”
- Dr Carlos David Rodríguez Gallegos (graduated PhD student supervised by Prof Sanjib Kumar Panda), Springer Award 2020.
The winning thesis is entitled “Modelling and Optimization of Photovoltaic Cells, Modules, and Systems”.
Each prize comprises 500 Euros, and publication of the PhD work in Springer’s collection of outstanding thesis.
- The Ph.D. thesis of our recent graduate, Dr. Oktoviano Gandhi, titled “Reactive Power Support Using Photovoltaic Systems: Techno-Economic Analysis and Implementation Algorithms” has been given the Springer Thesis Award for its scientific excellence and the high impact of its contents.
He did his research under the supervision of Professor Dipti Srinivasan and Dr. Thomas Reindl.
- Gurleen Kaur (PhD Student Supervised by Assoc Prof Aaron Danner) – Best Paper Award, 10th International Conference on Crystalline Silicon Photovoltaics (Silicon PV 2020).
The winning entry was titled “Can Charge Enhance Selectivity? Passivated Contacts Using a Highly Charged AlOx Dielectric Tunnel Layer Comparing SiOx/p+poly-Si and SiOx/PEDOT:PSS to AlOx/p+poly-Si and AlOx/PEDOT:PSS”.
This was selected as a top paper representing the best current research in crystalline Silicon PV technology, and chosen as one of the video highlights of the conference. The video presentation is available at https://cms2020.siliconpv.com/video/list.
- Dr Gnana Sambandam Kulothungan (PhD graduate supervised by Assoc Prof Akshay Kumar Rathore) –
2nd Prize, 2020 IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Student thesis Award, 19 May 2020.
The winning thesis is entitled “Low Frequency Modulation Techniques for Multilevel Converters for Solar PV Application”.

- Shao Guoliang (NUS ECE PhD Student Supervised by Prof. Guo Yongxin), Best Student Paper Award (First Prize), IEEE MTT-S 2019 International Microwave Biomedical Conference (IMBioC 2019), 06-08 May, 2019, Nanjing, China. The Winning entry is entitled “Wearable Magnetic Localization System with Noise Cancellation for Wireless Capsule Endoscopy”. There are 12/113 papers short listed. The prize comprises of a certificate and RMB 1000.
- Wang Cong (PhD Student Supervised by Professor Guo Yong Xin), Best Paper Award, FLASH Competition, 2019 IEEE MTT-S International Wireless Symposium, 19 – 22 May 2019, Guangzhou, China. The winning entry is entitled “Realization of a Reconfigurable Leaky-Wave Antenna with Fixed-Frequency Beam Scanning Capability Using Liquid Metal”.
2018
- Team POWER@NUS (comprising of PhD students and staff members from Electrical Machines and Drives Lab), supervised by Assoc Prof Sanjib Kumar Panda and Mr Blokken Eddy (SERIS) – Best Overall Student Team (South-Asia Region), 2018-19 edition of the IEEE “Empower a Billion Lives” competition, 18 – 21 Dec 2018, IIT Madras, Chennai, India. The team qualified to participate in the Global final round of this competition, to be held at ECCE, Baltimore, USA in September, 2019. The team has proposed a community empowerment solution via rural electrification along with a business model, where renewable energy is harnessed as the main source of energy with adequate respect given to risks.
- Berrak Sisman (PhD Student Supervised by Prof Li Haizhou) – PhD Forum Best Presentation Award, The 10th Asia-Pacific Signal & Information Processing Association Annual Summit & Conference (APSIPA), 12-15 Nov 2018, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. The winning entry is entitled “Limited Data Voice Conversion from Sparse Representation to GANs and WaveNet”.
- Team comprising Zhao Jian (PhD student), Li Jianshu (SoC PhD student), Cheng Yu (PhD student) – The supervisors for the various students are Dr Feng Jiashi, Assoc Prof Yan Shuicheng, Dr Robby Tan Tantowi and Assoc Prof Terence Sim (SoC). Best Student Paper, 26th ACM International Conference on Multimedia, 22 – 26 Oct 2018, Seoul, Korea. The winning paper is entitled “Understanding Humans in Crowded Scenes: Deep Nested Adversarial Learning and A New Benchmark for Multi-Human Parsing”.
- Team comprising EE undergraduates Cheng Huimin, Hu Jiawei & Koh Wai Heng (Supervised by Dr Rajesh Panicker and Dr Gao Zhi of Temasek Lab) – 2nd Prize, Intel Cup Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest 2018, 21 – 24 July 2018, Shanghai, China. Their winning entry is a wearable device (ARENA Glass) to provide warded patients and hospital staff real-time intuitive navigation within the building complex.
- Su Yuanyan (PhD Student Supervised by Prof Chen Zhining) – Best Student Paper, IEEE International Conference on Service Operations and Logistics, and Informatics (SOLI) 2018, 31 July – 2 Aug 2018, Singapore. The winning paper is entitled “High-Isolated Coplanar-Fed Circularly Polarized 2×2 Curl Antenna for MIMO Applications”.
- Team comprising Xu Yanjun, Luo Ziyan (PhD Students), Dr Yang Yumeng (graduated PhD student), Zhang Mengzhen (Research Engineer) and Prof Wu Yihong – Best Poster Award, 21st International Conference on Magnetism (ICM2018), 16-20 July 2018, USA. The winning entry is entitled “AC Excited Spin Hall Magnetoresistance Sensor with Extremely Simple Structure and Zero DC Offset”.
- PhD Student Kenan Emir AK (Supervised by Prof Ashraf Kassim, Dr Lim Joo Hwee (I2R) and Dr Tham Jo Yew) –2nd Position, FashionGen Challenge, European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV2018), 8-14 Sept 2018, Munich, Germany.
- Team comprising Wu Jibin, Pan Zihan (PhD Students) and Zhang Malu (Non-Graduating Student), supervised by Prof Li Haizhou and Dr Chua Yansong (A* Collaborator) – First Prize, 2nd International Collegiate Competition for Brain-Inspired Computing, Tsinghua University, China, 14 Oct 2018. The prize includes a certificate and a RMB 100,000.
- Lei Dian (graduated PhD student supervised by Prof Yeo Yee Chia and Dr Gong Xiao) – Best Student Paper Award, 2018 Symposia on VLSI Technology & Circuits, 18 – 22 June 2018, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. The winning entry is entitled “The First GeSn FinFET on a Novel GeSnOI Substrate Achieving Lowest S of 79 mV/decade and Record High Gm,int of 807 μS/μm for GeSn P‐FETs”

- Team comprising Lin Fenghan (PhD Student) and Prof Chen Zhining – Computer Simulation Technology (CST) University Publication Award 2017, Dassault Systemes, 22 Dec 2017, Darmstadt, Germany. The winning paper is entitled “Low-Profile Wideband Metasurface Antennas using Characteristic Mode Analysis”. The prize comprises a certificate and a free upgraded CST software license for one year.

- Dr Amin Kianinejad is awarded for his work on “Metamaterial Surface Plasmon Based Transmission Lines and Antennas”.
- Dr Amit Kumar Singh is awarded for his research on “Analysis and Design of Power Converter Topologies for Application in Future More Electric Aircraft”.
- Srien Sithara Syed Nasser (PhD Student Supervised by Prof Chen Zhining) – Best Student Paper (1st Prize), 6th Asia-Pacific Conference on Antennas and Propagation (APCAP), 16-19 Oct 2017, Xian, China. The winning entry is entitled “Low-profile Bilayer Metasurface Integrated Antenna for Cellular Base Stations”. The prize comprises a certificate and 300 USD.
- Su Yuanyan (PhD Student Supervised by Prof Chen Zhining) – Best Student Paper (2nd Prize), 6th Asia-Pacific Conference on Antennas and Propagation (APCAP), 16-19 Oct 2017, Xian, China. The winning entry is entitled “AMC-based High-isolation SIW Slot Array Antennas for Ka-band SAR Systems”. The prize comprises a certificate and 200 USD.

The winning paper is entitled “Is deep learning better than kernel regression for functional connectivity prediction of behaviour?”
