On November 25, 2021, the Asia Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP), a regional metrology organization (RMO) of the Asia-Pacific region, convened its 37th General Assembly. Representatives of National Measurement Institutes from the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, China, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, India and Singapore, attended the General Assembly. Associate Professor Thomas Liew was conferred the APMP Award, the highest honor of the APMP. The award is given to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the development of metrology in the Asia-Pacific Region.
The citation reads “In recognition of Dr. Thomas Liew for his significant contribution to APMP activities, including on the Executive Committee as Treasurer. He has also contributed to the international and regional metrology, notably serving on the International Committee of Weights and Measures (CIPM*) since 2014 and in chairing and co-founding the ASEAN Expert Group on Metrology (EGM) for the past seven years.”
Associate Professor Liew, has been with the Microelectronics Technologies and Devices Division of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department since 1994.
Concurrently, he was the Deputy Director (Research) of the Data Storage Institute at the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR) and later the Executive Director of the National Metrology Centre. He is currently an A*STAR Senior Fellow and Director (Research Infrastructure) and adjunct Associate Professor with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. His research interest is in magnetic data storage technologies, plasmonic, and spintronics devices. He taught courses in Advanced Characterization of Materials and Devices, Fundamental Processes in Semiconductor Microelectronic, Recording Heads and Media Design, Tribology and Mechanics of Data Storage Devices, and Magnetic Media Technology.
*CIPM: Comité international des poids et mesurés or the International Committee of Weights and Measures (https://www.bipm.org/en/committees/ci/cipm) is an organ of the Metre Convention that provide the direction and supervision to the Bureau international des poids et mesurés (BIPM) or the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Paris.
