Congratulations to Ph.D. student Mr. Ruolei Xu, supervised by Professor Zhi Ning Chen from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering for winning the First Prize Student Paper Award (Application Track) at the 2021 Marina Forum on EMetamaterials held on 4-5 Mar 2021, Singapore.
The award recognizes innovative research conducted by the team, on a metasurface lens array architecture for compact and low-cost beamsteering applications. Six papers were selected into the finalists list for Application Track, and one is finally awarded the First Prize. The paper entitled “A Compact Beamsteering Metasurface Lens Array Antenna with Low-cost Phased Array” presents a compact metasurface lens array fed by a phased array for low-cost, volumetric beamsteering applications. In this work, the thickness of the metasurface lens array antenna is reduced to one-third that of a typical single-large-aperture lens antenna while only three phase shifters are required across an aperture size of 7.2 wavelengths. The presented new architecture features the merit of high gain, lower cost, simpler feeding network and lower profile compared to conventional full phased arrays and single-aperture lens antennas which facilitates its application in the 5G wireless communication and radar systems.
It is noteworthy that Mr. Ruolei Xi also won the Excellent Award for the same entry paper, at the 2nd NUS EM & Microwave Student Symposium 2021, 25 Feb 2021, Singapore.
Another Ph.D. student supervised by Prof Zhining Chen i.e. Ms Yuanyuan Su also won Honorable Mention in the Student Paper Award (Application Track) at the 2021 Marina Forum on EMetamaterials for her paper entitled “A Radial Transformation-optics Mapping for Flat Ultra-wide-angle Dual-polarized Stacked GRIN MTM Luneburg Lens Antenna”.
