Congratulations to Mr. Cheng Zilong, Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore, for having received the 2020 Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech), Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) Best Student Award (Silver) for his project entitled “Data-based Algorithms for Control and Optimization”.
The SIMTech Best Student Award recognizes doctoral student excellence as a researcher contributing to industrial applications. The award ceremony will be held officially during the next All-Star Meeting in SIMTech, and he will be awarded two hundred Singapore dollars.
Supervised by Professor Lee Tong Heng (NUS, ECE), together with Dr. Ma Jun (ECE, NUS), and Dr. Li Xiaocong (SIMTech, A*STAR), Zilong has dedicated himself in the research and development of data-driven control and optimization algorithms and working on the application of these algorithms in industrial applications in the SIMTech-NUS Joint Lab on Precision Motion Systems. Rather importantly, his algorithms have yielded entirely new non-parametric routines for the establishment of the optimal control policy without the necessity of system modeling. Substantial achievements have also been made in several leading industrial projects. For example, investigation into the precision motion control of a flexure-based electromagnetic linear actuator and a magnetically levitated planar positioning system where significant improvement of the tracking accuracy is attained as compared to the existing works. All these applications are critical in the semiconductor industry.
Going forward, Zilong will explore more intelligent control and optimization algorithms and to contribute towards achieving higher performance for industrial applications.
