Student Best Paper Award at ICCAS2020

Ph.D. students Mr. Zilong Cheng, Ms. Xiaoxue Zhang, Research Fellow Dr. Jun Ma, supervised by Professor Tong Heng Lee from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering won the Student Best Paper Award at the 2020 20th International Conference on Control, Automation, and Systems (ICCAS2020).

The award recognizes innovative research conducted by the team, on an optimization algorithm related to the singular model predictive control problem. Eleven papers are selected in the finalists, and five papers are finally awarded.

The paper titled “Semi-Proximal ADMM for Model Predictive Control Problem with Application to a UAV System” outlines how the singular model predictive control problem can be solved in an innovative paradigm and applied for control of a UAV system. In this work, a novel optimization method is proposed to cater to the lasso MPC problem, which admits higher accuracy and higher efficiency than the interior-point method, especially for the lasso MPC problem with singular weighting matrices. Specifically, the MPC optimization problem is transformed into a convex form and solved by the ADMM method effectively.
