Professor HANG CHANG CHIEH, has been appointed President Advisor (NUSRI Guangzhou) since April 2023 to oversee the establishment and development of NUS Guangzhou Research Translation & Innovation Institute. Since July 2024, Prof Hang has been awarded the NUS Emeritus Professorship. He is a Fellow of IEEE (USA), a Foreign Member of the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK and a Fellow of Singapore Academy of Engineering.
Prof Hang received the Ph.D degree in Control Engineering from the University of Warwick, England, in 1973. From 1974 to 1977, he worked as a Computer and Systems Technologist in the Shell Eastern Petroleum Company (Singapore) and the Shell International Petroleum Company (The Netherlands). Since 1977, he has been with the National University of Singapore, serving in various positions including being the Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering. From 1994 to 2000, he served as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University in charge of research. From 2001 to 2003, he was seconded to Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) to serve as its Executive Deputy Chairman. In 2004, he resumed his academic career in the National University of Singapore. He served as the founding Head of the Division of Engineering and Technology Management, Faculty of Engineering from 2007 to 2016. From 2012 t0 2023, Prof Hang served as the founding Exec Director of Institute for Engineering Leadership of NUS. Since 2014, he has served as an International Advisor, Research Centre for Technological Innovation, School of Economics & Management, Tsinghua University, China.
Prof Hang received the 1998 Public Administration Medal (Gold) for his leadership and contributions in the university, and the 2000 National Science & Technology Medal for his leadership and contributions to science and technology development in Singapore. He served as the founding Deputy Chairman of the National Science and Technology Board (predecessor of A*STAR) from 1991 to 1999, and the founding Chairman of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) from 2001 to 2009. Prof Hang had also served as Board members of more than 10 public or private sector organizations over the years. Currently, he serves as founding non-executive Chairman of a high-tech company, co-founder and non-executive Chairman of two tech start-ups, and Advisors to 4 tech startups.
