The Rewired Hackathon 2024, organized by the IEEE-NUS Student Branch and NUS Bitscraps, was a thrilling week-long event that transformed NUS LT7A and the Linear Electronics Lab into hubs of innovation and creativity from May 25th to June 1st. Sponsored by tech giants Micron Technology and Espressif Systems, the hackathon drew around 100 passionate students eager to showcase their cutting-edge ideas and prototypes. The competition was divided into two categories: senior (university students) and junior (JC and Poly students).
Participants were not only competing but also learning and growing through a series of dynamic workshops. ALBA, an e-waste recycling organization, delivered a thought-provoking talk on the importance of recycling electronic waste, sparking awareness and inspiration. Dr. Rajesh Panicker from the ECE department captivated attendees with his hands-on Arduino workshop, while Espressif Systems delved into the exciting world of IoT applications. NUS club 1.5 Degrees NUS contributed with a workshop on sustainability, perfectly aligning with the hackathon’s theme of repurposing electronic items through IoT and Arduino devices.
The energy and ingenuity were palpable as participants brainstormed and built innovative solutions using the newfound knowledge from these workshops. Projects ranged from solar energy solutions and IR sensor-based replacements for motion sensors, to a tunnel autonomous lamp system, indoor mini greenhouse, and a keyboard repurposed into a number pad. The creativity and technical prowess on display were truly inspiring.
The event highlighted the enthusiastic collaboration between the IEEE-NUS Student Branch and NUS Bitscraps, making it a memorable and educational experience for all involved. Participants described the hackathon as both fun and informative, a testament to the hard work and dedication of the organizers.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to our sponsors, Micron Technology and Espressif Systems, whose support made the Rewired Hackathon 2024 possible. Here’s to more events that challenge and inspire the next generation of innovators!
